High in the Monte Rosa massif, on the border between Italy and Switzerland, stands a place that feels almost impossible: Capanna Regina Margherita, the highest mountain hut in Europe. Perched at 4,554 meters on the summit of Punta Gnifetti (Signalkuppe), it is a place where mountaineering, history, and Italian tradition come together in one extraordinary location.
In early July 2026, I had planned to climb Mont Blanc. However, due to the persistent heatwave and the conditions on that mountain, my plans have changed. So I set out to climb to Capanna Margherita during an alpine expedition in the Monte Rosa massif.
After spending the night at Capanna Gnifetti, located at 3,647 meters, I started the ascent in the early morning darkness. The mountain was quiet, the glaciers stretched out beneath the first light of day, and the peaks around me slowly appeared as the sun rose.

The climb was not simply a hike. Above the glacier, every step required focus. The thin air, the altitude, and the ever-changing mountain conditions reminded me that in the high Alps, nature is always in charge. Slowly, meter by meter, I moved higher into a world of ice, rock, and endless views. Due to the warm weather and the melting ice, there were many crevasses.
More than four and a half hours after leaving Capanna Gnifetti, I finally reached Signalkuppe and saw Capanna Regina Margherita standing proudly on the summit. Arriving there felt surreal. I was rewarded by a clear view, while some of the highest peaks in Europe surrounded me in every direction. It was one of those rare moments where the effort, the cold, and the exhaustion disappear — replaced by pure amazement.

But there was another reason this place is famous among climbers: the pizza.
Eating a Pizza Margherita at Capanna Regina Margherita is almost a tradition. After all, where else can you enjoy Italy’s most famous dish while sitting more than 4,500 meters above sea level? The combination of a simple pizza, a mountain refuge, and an unbelievable alpine panorama creates a memory that is difficult to match.

There is something wonderfully 'human' about this place. Humans have built a small refuge in one of the harshest environments of the Alps, and then decided that this is the perfect location to enjoy a slice of Italian comfort food. It is a beautiful reminder that exploration and joy can exist together.

Capanna Regina Margherita is not just a mountain hut. It is a destination you have to earn. It is a place where the journey matters as much as the arrival — and where a simple pizza can become one of the most unforgettable meals of your life.
