About
Completed in 1849, the Baker Mansion stands as a unique example of Greek Revival architecture right in the heart of Altoona, Pennsylvania. The mansion once housed Elias Baker, a wealthy ironmaster, and his family until 1914. Soon afterwards, the Blair County Historical Society came into its possession and turned it into a museum that still operates today.
A vast collection of the family's original furniture and belongings is housed within the mansion to this day, including hand-carved furniture from Belgium and mirrors imported from France. Additionally, rare artifacts from the surrounding area's history reside within the mansion's walls, including a large table that was allegedly used to review early drafts of the Emancipation Proclamation at the Loyal War Governors' Conference of September 1862.
Perhaps the most famous artifact on display, though, is the haunted wedding dress of Anna Baker. Legend says that Anna received this dress for her wedding day, but her father, Elias, never allowed her to marry the one man she truly loved. Angered at her father's decision, Anna swore that she would never marry. And, indeed, she did not, as Anna died alone at the mansion in 1914. However, it seems that a part of Anna still remains within the mansion, as dozens of guests have reported seeing her dress move on its own and hearing faint whispers while viewing it. These stories of Anna's wedding dress, combined with accounts of other strange figures seen throughout the home, make the Baker Mansion a must-see for paranormal enthusiasts.
For those who visit the mansion during its seasonal public hours, you can browse its outdoor gardens, take part in guided tours of the home, and even attend special public events such as outdoor concerts and Halloween lantern tours.
