About

Perched more than 4,000 feet above sea level at the northern edge of Dolly Sods, Bear Rocks is one of the most unusual landscapes in the Appalachian Mountains. Its broad sandstone outcrops overlook the Allegheny Front, while stunted red spruce, blueberry and huckleberry heath, and open barrens create an ecosystem more commonly associated with Canada than West Virginia. The combination of elevation, exposure, and cool climate has allowed northern plant communities to persist here long after the last Ice Age retreated.

The rocks themselves tell an even older story. The flat-topped plateau is a textbook example of how ancient mountains gradually transform over millions of years. After the Appalachians were thrust upward by continental collisions, erosion slowly wore them down, leaving behind the broad, sandstone-capped plateau visitors see today. In recognition of its exceptional geology and ecology, Bear Rocks and the surrounding Allegheny Front Preserve were designated a National Natural Landmark in 2021.

Despite its dramatic appearance, Bear Rocks remains easily accessible. A short walk from the parking area leads directly onto the weathered sandstone ledges, where uninterrupted views stretch for miles across the Monongahela National Forest. Sunrise and sunset transform the cliffs into one of West Virginia’s most photographed vistas, while autumn paints the surrounding heath barrens in vivid reds and oranges.

Beyond the overlook lies Dolly Sods Wilderness, one of the East Coast’s most distinctive backcountry landscapes. Nearly 50 miles of trails wind through bogs, windswept plains, streams, and recovering red spruce forests, offering hikers a glimpse of an ecosystem unlike anywhere else in the region.
