About

The area of Bhawani Peth in Pune got its name from an old temple of Goddess Bhawani. Near this temple, there is another centuries-old temple dedicated to Lord Balaji.

The temple of Lord Balaji is believed to be more than 800 years old. According to local sources, back in those times, there was a forest in this area and many Hindu sages and monks came to meditate here. Eventually a temple was built at this spot. It is said that back then, a sacred conch was blown at this spot and the entire area in the vicinity, where the sound of the conch could be heard, came to be a part of the premises of the temple.

The temple has a unique idol of the deity. It is believed to be the only temple in the world where the idol of Lord Balaji is in a sitting position. In all the other temples of the deity, the idol is in a standing position.

The huge spire of the temple is most impressive. Upon stepping within the temple premises, the spire immediately commands the attention of visitors with its artistic stonework.
