About

This natural formation emerged about 5 million years ago, when granite massifs “sprouted” from the flat plains of Kazakhstan. For centuries, nomadic peoples considered these lands sacred. Rock paintings of the Saks still survive here, as does the stone of Abylai Khan, marked with the imprint of his hand.

In the 20th century the restorative properties of local lakes such as Shchuchye and Borovoye became known, and by 2020 Burabay had grown into an international resort area while maintaining a careful balance with its natural environment. Within its 8,500 hectares you’ll find relict pine forests, 14 lakes of varying mineral composition, and modern hotels hidden among the rocks.

The best-known landmark is Okzhetpes Rock, whose name translates to “you can’t reach it with an arrow,” a peak shrouded in legend.
