About

Nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario, on the Whitby-Oshawa border, once stood one of the Allies’ most closely guarded secrets. Officially known as Special Training School No. 103, Camp X was established in 1941 to train Allied agents in sabotage, espionage, explosives, radio communications, and the art of silent killing before sending them behind enemy lines.

Camp X was also home to the “Hydra” communications station, a sophisticated radio facility that transmitted encrypted messages across the Atlantic between North America and Britain.

At the outset of the Cold War, Soviet cipher clerk Igor Gouzenko’s defection exposed a vast Soviet espionage network and alerted the West to the true danger of USSR espionage. He was brought to Camp X from Ottawa to be secretly housed and interviewed by MI5 and the FBI.

Camp X has also earned a place in spy folklore. Ian Fleming visited the camp during the Second World War, and although the extent of its influence on James Bond remains debated, Fleming knew the Camp X founder William Stephenson (codename: Intrepid) well, and later drew on the world of wartime intelligence when creating 007. One of the camp’s wartime officers, Paul Dehn, later wrote the screenplay for Goldfinger.

Little remains of the camp today beyond a memorial and a quiet lakeside park. Yet its past still has a habit of resurfacing. Storms occasionally uncover wartime artefacts along the shoreline, while metal detectorists continue to recover relics buried beneath the soil. Even the camp’s largest private collection of artefacts was eventually dispersed, leaving the story of Camp X scattered almost as widely as the spies it once trained.
