About

The Champion Lodgepole Pine, located near Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, is considered to be one of the largest of its kind in the world. Estimated to be over 440 years old, this massive, 110-foot-tall natural wonder is an incredibly rare survivor in Southern California.

The U.S. Forest Service officially recognizes it as the largest recorded lodgepole pine in California, and its massive volume (9,300 board feet) and age (over 440 years) safely rank it among the top giants of its species worldwide.

Mind-Blowing Tree Facts

Ancient Roots: The tree germinated around 1560, more than 50 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

Massive Proportions: It reaches over 110 feet in height with a trunk circumference of 22 feet. Its bulbous base measures a staggering 36 feet around.

Tons of Timber: It contains an estimated 9,300 board feet of timber, which is enough raw lumber to build a 1,300-square-foot house.

A Southern California Anomaly: Lodgepole pines rarely grow in Southern California, and when they do, they usually reside at elevations above 8,000 feet. This grove is a unique remainder from a time when the local climate was much cooler.

Fun Facts About the Hike

Easy Access: The trail to the tree is a 0.5-mile gentle walk through the lush Bluff Mesa area.

The Journey In: The drive to the trailhead is an adventure of its own. Located south of Big Bear Lake Village, the route transitions from pavement to a rocky forest road (FS Road 2N10) where a high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended.

Historical Landmarks: If you look closely at the pine, you might notice old notches or "blazes" carved into the wood. These were used as trail markers by early wagon trains.
