About

These three giant tactile fruits on display in a public plaza are the first permanent artwork installation in United Kingdom to be dedicated to the Windrush Generation.

The sculptures depict fruits popular in Caribbean cuisine: custard apple, breadfruit, and soursop. Each is cast in bronze or marble. Created by artist Veronica Ryan, the sculptures honor the Caribbean diaspora that transformed Britain, particularly those who arrived between 1948 and 1971. These immigrants were known as the Windrush Generation, named after the HMT Empire Windrush ship that carried some of the first immigrants from the Caribbean after World War II.

Ryan chose the three fruits, each a staple of Caribbean cuisine, for their unique appearance: curves, lumps, bumps, and prickles. The artist believed that these tactile textures would encourage visitors to interact with the artwork, while honoring the culinary legacy of a generation.
