About
On a mountain road crossing the island you will stumble upon the remains for Campochairo, now Eleousa village. In the centre there are three imposing, mostly abandoned buildings which had various uses during the villages history.
Originally setup for Italian loggers with a grand design based upon alpine villages the buildings were originally the hub of the town containing the market and school.
The village was a command centre for Italian and German forces in world war 2 and for around thirty years after the war the school building was used as a sanitarium for Tuberculosis sufferers and has been abandoned ever since.
One of the buildings is partly used as a outer activity school and the remaining part of it was a gym at some point, through the windows you can see abandoned gym equipment and piles of tables and chairs.
There is a church that is still in use on the square and beautiful cistern reservoir nearby that used to be used to feed the village and now is home to a breed of rare local fish.
