About
These days immigration is a common thing, leading to most countries having nationals from almost every place on Earth. The Vlaggenparade (or flagparade) of Rotterdam shows this by flying over 230 flags on the shore between the Willemsbrug and the Erasmusbrug.
The flag parade project was started in 1989 and officially opened by the city's mayor in 2000. It sports 230 flagposts which have 174 (out of 193) country flags, which represent the nationalities of people living in the Netherlands. The remaining 56 are used to represent events, organizations, and sponsors. For example, during the Olympics it sports flags of countries playing on a given day.
Due to a complex lighting system it is possible to see the flags 24/7, which means that they do not need to be taken down at night. The masts are maintained by a organization with the same name.
