About

At first glance, Freedom Park seems like simply a peaceful escape into nature. Mountain bikers weave through miles of trails. Families picnic beneath pine trees. Birdsong replaces traffic. But if you look closer, you'll discover there’s much more to the site than playgrounds and hiking paths. It was home to one of the earliest known free Black settlements in colonial Virginia.

The community’s origins trace back to the early 19th century, when, upon death, plantation owner William Ludwell Lee freed his enslaved workers and granted them tracts of land on his property. From 1803 through 1860, families built farms, established churches, raised children, and created a community that endured for generations. Today, historians recognize the settlement as one of the nation’s earliest documented free Black communities.

Thanks to the work of historians, descendants, and advocates, the park pays homage to this incredible history via exhibits and educational signage. A Virginia historical marker near the entrance introduces visitors to the settlement. Alongside hiking and cycling trails, exhibits explore the lives of the community’s early Black landowners and their descendants, including reconstructions of their homes.

Rather than separating recreation from history, Freedom Park encourages visitors to encounter both at once. Here, a morning hike becomes an opportunity to consider whose footsteps came first.
