About
In the seaside Irish town of Dingle, just next to the Dingle Harbour, stands a statue of Fungie the Dingle Dolphin, a local legend famous for his long lifespan and friendly interactions with humans.
Fungie was first spotted off the coast of Dingle in 1983. Over the course of nearly forty years, locals and tourists alike reported playful interactions with Fungie, whose fame attracted attention, news reports, and tourism to the town of Dingle. In 2019, Guinness World Records declared him the world's oldest solitary wild dolphin. Rumors circulated that Fungie had died and been replaced by a lookalike, but such rumors have since been debunked.
Fungie was last seen on 13 October 2020, with marine experts speculating he had moved to new waters or passed away. However, Fungie's legacy lives on in the hearts of Dingle locals and in the form of this bronze statue erected on 2 January 2000.
