About
A couple miles up a dirt road off of U.S. 20 lie a few basic structures and a small cemetery from the now deserted town of Gebo, Wyoming.
Once a booming coal settlement, its population dwindled as mining operations shut down. Most of the town was bulldozed in 1971, but the cemetery appears to be maintained and even visited by relatives, with coins and flowers left at the graves. Notably, many of those who lie here are children and infants.
This fascinating detour from the highway leaves you in a calm and serene spot overlooking Hot Springs County. It's sure to make you ponder the days of the town’s former glory and the lives of coal miners and their families that once were.

Know Before You Go
Turn onto Sand Draw Road from US 20/ WYO 789. (Left if coming north from Thermopolis, other direction will be sign for Kirby). Keep straight at the fork in the road and follow what is now Gebo Road for about one mile. There is a large pulloff/ parking area before another road that brings you closer to the structures. It's recommended to walk up there if you don't have 4x4/high clearance, as the road has some deep ruts. Lots of glass shards everywhere. From there the cemetery is about a half-mile continuing west, turning left at the fork.
