About
The Howard Tunnel, located near Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania, has been in operation since 1838, making it the second-oldest active rail tunnel in the U.S. The tunnel was originally constructed by the York and Maryland Line Rail Road as part of the north-south line assembled by the Northern Central Railway. This tunnel is only accessible by walking or biking along the Heritage Rail Trail, or by riding through it on a Northern Central Railway train.
The tunnel is one of many interesting landmarks along the Heritage Rail Trail, serving as a great spot to stop and take photos while enjoying the outdoors. It is especially scenic when the leaves begin to change color.
As part of their programming, Northern Central Railway highlights the tunnel in some of their ticketed train tours, allowing patrons to see the tunnel in its continued use.
