About
Hidden in the southern reaches of Mendoza Province, la Payunia Reserve is one of the world’s densest volcanic fields, boasting over 800 volcanic cones scattered across a surreal black-and-red landscape. The region’s dark basalt plains, formed by ancient lava flows, stretch toward the horizon, giving the reserve an otherworldly feel, like walking on another planet.
It is the largest protected area in the Patagonian steppe, and, despite its harsh, wind-swept environment, is inhabited by foxes, pumas, and a variety of birds. Chief among its species is the guanaco, which has the world's largest migratory population there. The habitat is also home to the endangered Andean cat, only recently documented in the region's volcanic steppe.
Its remoteness means few travelers make it here, but those who do are rewarded with sweeping vistas, eerie silence, and the chance to witness a landscape shaped entirely by fire and time.
