Lyon is a great place to discover the history of the Roman empire, but also to learn about the growth of Christianity in Gaul and the Christian martyrs of the time.

L’Antiquaille is the best place to discover how Lyon became an important Christian center in France. The museum explores the growth of the religion in the city under Bishop Pothinus. During the year 177 in the city of Lugdunum now modern-day Lyon, Christians were persecuted under the reign of Marcus Aurelius. 

Although it’s unknown what caused the persecutions, a mob killed some 40 Christians around the city. Inside the museum, visitors can also view the dungeons where Ponthinus and other Christians were held. The museum is also filled with wonderful paintings and mosaïcs. It’s a great place to learn about the ancient history of Lyon.
