About

The Lületaşı museum is tucked within a 16th century mosque complex on the edge of the touristy Odunpazarı old town, occupying a narrow L-shaped corridor in a corner building. It's a showcase for master carvers of the mineral sepiolite, locally known as lületaşı, but better known to the rest of the world as meerschaum — a soft, white clay mineral used to make tobacco pipes.

The museum is small and simple, consisting of a few display cases and explanatory texts, running the length of the two courtyard-facing walls. The other side of the corridor hosts vendors selling sepiolite items and other souvenirs.

This area of Turkey is known to be the main source of material for the meerschaum pipes that were popular from the late 18th to early 20th centuries. Though there were once master pipe carvers spread around Europe and even America, Turkey is the home of the craft today. The museum gives a brief overview of the local history of sepiolite in informational panels in between the display cases. Various pipes are the main attraction, as well as jewelry, chess sets, and portrait busts.
