About
The Art and History Museum is one of the most important museums in Brussels and Belgium. Located in the eastern part of the city, it is renowned for its collections of historical objects from Belgium and around the world. These collections are organised by geographical area, period or theme. One of these thematic collections stands out in particular: the Museum of the Heart.
Housed in a dimly lit room, this collection displays around 500 objects dating from the 16th to the 20th century. It explores the heart in both its Christian symbolism, such as the Sacred Heart of Jesus and ex-votos, and its symbolism of love. Assembled by cardiologist Noubar Boyadjian, this collection originally covered the walls of his home and medical office. In 1990, he donated it to the museum so that it could be accessible to all.
This astonishing collection broadens our understanding of the heart as a symbol, particularly around Valentine's Day.
