About
The National Road Museum honors the first federal highway system, which was built between 1811 and 1834 and ran from Baltimore, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois.
The National Road helped to propel people seeking their fortunes to the central and western parts of the growing country. It has grown along with the nation, as inns, motels, restaurants, bridges, and tollbooths have sprouted up along the 620-mile byway.
The museum's exhibits include an 1830s street scene that takes visitors back to the days when this historical passage was still being built. There is another feature that focuses on vehicles over the years. Yet another display centers on pike towns.
This museum lays out visions of the past to inspire the regional travelers of the future.
