About
Rainforest Cafe burst onto the theme restaurant scene with a boom of tinny recorded thunder and a flash of strobe-enabled lightning. It offered an iconic and venturous "eatertainment" experience that, for many younger millennials and elder Gen Z children, was a defining element of their upbringing. Animatronic animals, rich decor, and timed special effects have always helped the Rainforest Cafe defend its niche, but that niche has not been as valuable as it once was.
In the early 2020s, the chain fell on hard times. A global pandemic, a turbulent economy, and a gradual drift away from both themed restaurants and in-person entertainment cut the number of locations in the United States to less than half of its peak numbers. Despite the headwinds against it, the chain's most audacious foray into amusement park elements is getting more attention than ever.
The first (and at the time of writing only) full-fledged ride within a Rainforest Cafe, the Rainforest River Adventure Ride initially opened in 2003. However, it's been updated to appeal to an image-obsessed new generation. It's a river ride that flows among the most photogenic corners of the restaurant, allowing plenty of opportunity for photography with Instagram-bait backdrops. The roughly eight-minute experience is as bite-sized as its appetizers, but saves riders the commitment of going to a full-blown theme park for a nostalgic dark ride experience.
Know Before You Go
The ride opens slightly later than the restaurant itself, at 11 a.m.
