About
Built in the 3rd century AD as part of the fortifications of Lindum Colonia, the Roman Upper South Gate was one of the primary entry points into the Roman city. Lindum Colonia was a major settlement and military outpost for the Romans in Britain, originally established around AD 60 as a fortress for the Ninth Legion Hispana. It later developed into a fully-fledged Roman colony for retired legionaries. The gate formed part of the city's southern defenses, guarding the route from the south as it entered the city, making it a critical access point for trade, military operations, and civic life.
While much of the original Roman gate has been lost over the centuries, remnants of its structure still exist within the fabric of the building at 44 Steep Hill. The modern building incorporates surviving elements of Roman stonework, giving visitors a glimpse into the original construction techniques and layout of Roman Lincoln’s defensive walls. The gate would have been a grand, imposing structure in its time, with arched entrances flanked by defensive towers, allowing for the control of movement in and out of the city. Today these remnants offer a connection to the Roman past that has been integrated into the evolving cityscape of Lincoln.
The location of the gate on Steep Hill is also of great significance. Steep Hill is one of Lincoln’s most famous and historically rich streets, connecting Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle at the top of the hill with the lower part of the city. The road itself follows the path of the original Roman route that ran through the gate. Walking up Steep Hill today, visitors trace the footsteps of Roman soldiers, merchants, and citizens who once passed through the very same gate to enter Lindum Colonia.
In its prime, the Upper South Gate would have been a bustling point of entry for the Roman city, regulating traffic and providing protection from potential invaders. Archaeological evidence suggests that the gate had at least two arches for vehicles and pedestrians, similar to other Roman gates found across Britain, such as those at York and Chester.
