About
The Imperial Calcasieu Museum tells the story of Lake Charles, from its indigenous origins through French settlement and industrial growth into the modern era—several centuries of events to which an ancient oak in the museum’s backyard has borne witness.
Named for the city’s founder, Charles Sallier, The Sallier Oak is estimated to be between 250 and 375 years old, according to a certified arborist. While museum attendees can today take in the arboreal calm by lounging on benches beneath its gargantuan branches, this stately tree is a local symbol of resilience for having survived some spectacularly foul weather.
Visitors will notice a band of thick harbor chains wrapped around the tree’s trunk that has, in some places, been enveloped by the live oak. Indeed, after the tree was split in two by lightning in 1918, the community came together to bind the separated trunks back together. The operation was so successful that the oak went on to survive some of the strongest hurricane winds to ever reach coastal Louisiana. While they blew away much of the tree’s foliage, hurricanes Audrey, Rita, Laura, and Delta were no match for the deep roots and sturdy boughs of The Sallier Oak.
The tree is also the site of a local legend involving the man for whom it’s named. Legend has it that Sallier saw his wife Catherine embracing renowned pirate Jean Lafitte under the boughs of the great oak and fired his pistol at the pair in a blind rage. His wife collapsed and Sallier fled the scene. Purportedly, his wife’s amethyst brooch blocked the bullet from doing any bodily harm, but he was never seen again.
