About

Built in secret by soldiers who didn't even know what they were building, this military facility was one of the best kept secrets during the Cold War.

Situated north of Leipzig near the village of Kossa, the bunker was built between 1976 and 1979. In case of war this would have been the command center for the staff of East-Germany's military district III, responsible for the security of the southern territory.

It is speculated that the site may have been intended to serve a far greater role in times of conflict than previously thought and was even meant to serve as the frontline command center for a major strike against Western Europe. This is indicated by both its location and the secured phone lines and tropospheric radio communication with Moscow.

Of special interest are the "vehicle tubes" and the bunker facilities for communication, logistics and the command center.
