About
The area of Camp near Pune Railway Station is full of British-era architecture and heritage buildings. This area is adjacent to the old city and was established by the British officials of that time.
During the 19th century, a lot of British and European officials were posted in Pune (back then, it was called Poona). For them, the then Governor of Mumbai (then Bombay), Sir Henry Bartle Frere Bart, laid the foundation stone of St. Paul’s Church on 29 August 1863. The church was consecrated on 5 March 1867. After St. Mary’s Church, this is the second Anglican church in Pune.
It is believed that the design of this Gothic church has been inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. On the outside, the church has artistic gargoyles, lancet windows, buttresses and a huge bell tower. Within the church, there is a marble reredos near the altar, above which there are two stained-glass windows. The church also has an antique pipe organ.
