About

The Tanamá River crosses three cities of Puerto Rico, including Utuado,  where any adventurer can discover an array of unique ecological adventures with Tanamá River Adventures. Experiences inside the canyon include exploring waterfalls, diving, rappelling, climbing, body rafting, and hiking through the forest. Visitors can learn about the culture of the land from guides as they cross fields of coffee, banana, plantain, and orange plantations.

Parts of the Tanamá take tubers underground through different types of caves. One of the caves is a 1,000-foot-long tunnel that has been shaped by the river over thousands of years and takes about 30 minutes to navigate through. Other caves feature amazing stalactites, stalagmites, and cavern wildlife. Because there aren’t any rapids on the Tanamá River, visitors can relax and glide calmly through underground caverns in the dark, using headlamps to provide light to explore the surrounding natural beauty.

Not far from the Tanamá River, visitors can find the Parque Ceremonial Indígena de Caguana, the largest Taíno archeological site in the Caribbean. The Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Site offers insight into the Taíno lifestyle before the Spaniards arrived in Puerto Rico. The site hosts 10 batéys, or ceremonial plazas used by the Taíno people for dances, rituals, reunions, and games.

Know Before You Go

Excursions to the Tanamá River are strenuous, so visitors should be in shape when they visit. The cave tunnel is narrow and dark and could trigger anyone with claustrophobia. Activities in the Tanamá River are subject to weather conditions. Hazardous weather conditions could be a reason for tour cancellation. All tours depart at 8:30 am or 9 am and have a weight limit of 240 pounds.
