About

Opened in 1987, the Book Loft maintains the curiosity and friendliness of its late owner, Bill Nelson, who founded the store with the hopes of keeping the old-fashioned bookstore experience alive. As Amelia Island’s oldest bookstore, the Book Loft has a loyal customer base that turns up to browse its extensive collection (and visit Katherine, the ghost who lives in its titular loft).

Along with fiction and nonfiction classics and bestsellers, the shop houses an extensive collection of books on Amelia Island and Florida history, including some autographed first editions and an especially robust selection of pirate tales. It also celebrates the island’s vibrant cultural heritage with a collection of local antiques and work by the renowned watercolor artist William Maurer. Inside the store, visitors can curl up with a new read in a cozy armchair or take a book from the top-hat-wearing black bear who keeps watch by the staircase.

The Book Loft engages Amelia Island’s literary community with regular author visits, book clubs, language classes, and children’s story times. Among the many famous authors who have visited the store is John Grisham, whose best-selling Camino Island series is said to be inspired by his time living on Amelia Island and perusing the Loft.

Today, the Book Loft is still owned and operated by Nelson’s daughter, Beth, and his widow, Sue. Its bright baby-blue building has become one of the main attractions in Fernandina Beach’s downtown, attracting tourists and locals alike with a welcoming staff and eclectic collection of local history. In August 2025, it was named Best Regional Bookstore by Guide to Florida as voted by readers across the state.
