About
At first glance, the idea of finding a massive sculpture of a human intestine inside a zoo might seem bizarre, but “The Gut,” located in the Bratislava Zoo, fits surprisingly well among the animal exhibits. The giant winding form celebrates the most overlooked “animals” we live with: the trillions of microorganisms that make up the human gut microbiome.
Created by acclaimed artists, this monumental artwork has become one of the zoo’s most talked-about pieces. Its size is striking, its subject unexpected, and its meaning both scientific and poetic, a reminder that life teems within us just as it does in the habitats around us.
Although the zoo doesn’t officially encourage climbing, visitors often can’t resist the temptation. On busy days, you’ll find both kids and adults scrambling up its smooth, looping structure, laughing as they trace the path of digestion in sculptural form. Just across from “The Gut,” a herd of European fallow deer grazes peacefully, adding to the surreal charm of the setting.
Loved by some and considered controversial by others, the sculpture has become a small icon of Bratislava’s playful embrace of modern art. The zoo is open year-round and admission is inexpensive, making it easy to visit this delightfully strange monument to our inner life.
