About
"The Quorum" or "Stone Faces" is a sculpture subtly hidden in some dry stone walls in the middle of the Galloway Forest Park near Loch Black.
The faces were created by the artist Matt Baker during his residency in the Forest Park in 1997.
The faces are carved from local stone. The weathered faces are hidden in plain sight, tucked away as they are among the regular stones used in the dry stone walls.
The sculpture is not supposed to dominate the landscape, but rather to coexist in harmony with it. Moss and lichen have now grown over the stone faces, blending them in with the rest of the walls around them.
There are supposed to be six faces in total, according to what we could find on the Internet, but we only spotted five during our visit (it was starting to get dark and we didn't want any broken bones from scrambling around in the dark). Maybe there are even more out there hidden away watching you look for them. We started to think we were seeing faces which were likely just lichen growing on a regular stone. This ambiguity made the hunt become a challenge to see who could spot them first!
Know Before You Go
There is a car park and an easy walk from The Quorum.
Nearby are a couple of waterfalls, and further artworks around Black Loch.
