About
It is not difficult to find the De Salvo family plot. Standing out amongst the flat slabs and marble obelisks, the De Salvo tomb features a detailed sculpture of the family carved into the marble. Even though it has been exposed to the elements for nearly a century, you can still see the facial features, folds in clothing, and the individual fringes of the carpet.
Angelo and Rosa De Salvo died in 1930 and 1927. Their photos adorn the front of the family tombstone, though it’s not clear if their children are buried with them.
While the sculpture is impressive, the tombstone has another feature that makes it unique. If you grab the top half of the tomb, it will rotate around the base. The reason for this feature is unknown. It’s also unknown who was the first to figure it out. The legend of the spinning tomb has been passed down from generation to generation. It's a delightful piece of local lore that is actually true.
Know Before You Go
The De Salvo Tombstone is located in section 19, just southeast of the Archbishop’s Mausoleum in the center of the cemetery. While the top half does rotate, it is very heavy. If you have a bad back, bring a strong friend. Please remember that it's customary to return the headstone to its original position before leaving.
