About
During the construction of the Park Klinik Weissensee, the principle : salus aegroti suprema lex- meaning “the patient’s well-being is the highest law”—was taken to heart. The design of the building, rotating art exhibitions in its main corridor, and architecture that floods nearly every space with natural light give the hospital an almost hotel-like atmosphere.
In the surrounding “Park of the Senses,” visitors find sculptural art, a fitness trail, a large stone gong, and a hedge maze often enjoyed by kindergarten groups, all designed to gently distract patients from illness and suffering.
Yet even in this bright, tranquil setting, life eventually comes to an end. Not far from the rear exit of the pathology department—where the deceased are discreetly collected—lies a strange and haunting sight: a three-trunked oak tree that has grown around and swallowed a stone urn at the point where its trunks diverge. When first discovered in 2012, fragments of a date, affixed in metal letters, were still visible: 23.8.
How did this urn end up inside the tree? Was it lifted from the ground by the growing oak? And whose ashes now rest within its living wood? Its true origin remains unknown, leaving each visitor to draw their own conclusion.
The hospital grounds are bordered by cemeteries, though the land was once a horse market.
