About
One doesn't see animals on top of buildings every day, especially if they are gophers wearing hats. While such novelty architecture is commonly associated with mid-century roadside tourist traps, this statue actually dates from 2019, making it among the newest such structures. Its eyes light up different colors, making the gopher even more prominent at night.
Owner and restaurateur Joe Johnston says Topo was directly inspired by older roadside architecture, especially the Bulldog Cafe from the film The Rocketeer. The building is specifically designed to resemble those of the early 20th century and blend in with nearby architecture. He specifically chose to build a gopher ("topo" in Spanish) because growing up, they were a common nuisance on his family's farm. The construction of the four-foot-tall statue was kept a secret, surprising locals when it was hoisted up!
Besides the gopher that continues to steal passersby's attention, the restaurant itself has become known for its burritos, elotes, and unique prickly pear soft-serve ice cream.
