About
The Klamath Tour Thru Tree is one of the younger attractions of its kind, around 800 years old and standing about 90 feet fall with 17-foot-diameter trunk. The opening is big enough for most vehicles (including sedans and SUVs), but would probably not be sufficient if you have a large truck.
The tree's trunk was first hollowed out in the 1970s and commissioned by Harold A. Del Ponte, a celebrated member of the Del Norte community. Del Ponte is said to have offered the two laborers who carved out the tunnel a choice between $600 up-front or a lifetime share of the tourism revenue generated by the attraction. Both men took the cash, but likely regretted their choice. The tree now receives tens of thousands of visitors every year.
There is not much to see here besides the tree, so it is more of a quick drive-thru, take-a-few-pictures-and-leave type experience. The gift shop has souvenirs related to the tree and the area. Although it may not have the same popularity as its rival, the Chandelier Tree in Leggett, California, visitors of the Tour Thru Tree can still enjoy a memorable experience and fun photo-op.
