About
This heritage tramway links the town of Sóller to the small village of Port de Sóller on the island of Mallorca. It is one of only two first generation preserved tramways in Spain. The other is the Tramvia Blau in Barcelona ( https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tramvia-blau) .
It was opened in late 1913 and has a length of just over 3 miles. The tramway was constructed by the rail company which constructed the Ferrocarril de Sóller between Palma and Sóller which is itself nowadays operated as a heritage system also known as the Orange Express ( https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tren-de-soller).
There are several powered cars and trailers originating from the inception of the tramway in 1913 but the oldest rolling stock are open sided trailer cars which were built in 1890 and previously operated in Palma de Mallorca.
For tram and rail aficionados, the track gauge is 3ft and the power supply is an overhead 600V DC supply. The gauge is the same as the Palma-Sóller railway and is the narrowest tramway guage in the country (the majority are 1000mm)
The line has 17 stops, most of them are very basic, consisting of a raised concrete platform, but no buildings. Trams run every half hour during the day ( from 7am) and hourly after 8pm. The inland passenger terminus is just outside the entrance to the Sóller station. If you arive by the historic train the tram ride to the beach, on an equally historic system, is the natural next step.
