About
Meander through a thick forest of hardwoods, hemlocks, meadows, and more along the Tsuga Trail in Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
The 1.2-mile scenic trail is located in the Erie National Wildlife Refuge, home to protected habitats like emerging marshes, upland grasses, wetlands, and creeks that draw diverse waterfowl and wildlife. In fact, the refuge is the only in the country protecting endangered northern riffleshell and clubshell mussels. Bridges carry walkers over streams and a beaver pond.
Bring your binoculars: With 230 known bird species inhabiting the area, birders flock to the preserve, which has been designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. Lakeside views are ideal for wildlife spotting and photography, and visitors are sure to catch ospreys, wood ducks, kestrels, bald eagles, and more. For budding bird enthusiasts, a “Let’s Go Birding” booklet is available in the refuge office or online.
Other popular recreational activities near the trail include hunting, fishing, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.
