About
Out in southwestern Iowa, near Avoca, there’s a giant spider made from a Volkswagen Beetle, perched on eight spindly metal legs, part sculpture, part cornfield sentinel.
Built in the late 1980s by siblings, as a gift for their father, the sculpture uses the painted body of an old VW Beetle mounted high above the ground. It’s visible just over the corn when driving toward town.
Know Before You Go
It sits on a residential property, so visitors should be respectful and enjoy the view from the street. Not to be confused with the Volkswagen spider sculpture in Palm Springs, California, or the handful of other ‘spider bugs’ scattered across the U.S.
