About
The White Cliffs of Epes in Epes, Alabama, are striking natural chalk bluffs that rise dramatically along the Tombigbee River—formed of nearly pure white Selma Chalk, a type of limestone rich in marine fossils.
Often compared to the White Cliffs of Dover in England, which were formed around the same time, the Epes cliffs are a unique geological feature in the southeastern U.S. and attract interest for their beauty and scientific significance.
Know Before You Go
The best view of the cliffs is from the river or the riverbank opposite the cliffs.
Stay far away from the edges of the cliffs. The top layer is loose rock that may be unstable.
