About

A beautiful herd of over thirty bright painted horses can be found throughout the city of Lindsborg, also known as "Little Sweden". Inspired by other towns' life-sized reproductions of  their local symbols, Lindsborg wanted to celebrate its own icon that came with the first Swedish immigrants in 1869.

In 2000, the Wild Dala Herd was created: local artisans built the first wooden horse, Queen Katarina Ditto, while the rest of the herd was molded in fiberglass made in Ohio. Each horse has a very unique personality and is marked with the horse's name, donor and artist.

This provides a great scavenger hunt opportunity for those visiting town. For anyone struggling to spot them all, a free map is available showing the location of most horses. You can start or finish at the Hemslojd, the local Dala horse factory that sells a wide variety of Swedish imports and a large Dala that you can hop on for a selfie.

Know Before You Go

Grab a map to find all the locations at the Lindsborg Convention and Visitors Bureau (104 E. Lincoln St.) or the Travel Information Center (118 N. Main Street). A simplified, visual version that is perfect for kids can also be found at the same location. All the horses on this version can be found on Main Street.

To check each horse off of your list, you will need to visit between Monday and Saturday, since a couple of the horses are inside buildings that are not accessible on Sundays.
