About
Few people are more famous in Switzerland than William Tell, the folk hero who started a rebellion with his excellent marksmanship. While not much is left of the man, his bow is allegedly the property of a restaurant in Zurich.
William Tell is often described as the Robin Hood of Switzerland due to his rebellious persona and origin story in which he refused to bow to the hat of a local ruler and was sentenced to death. However, he was told that he and his son would be spared if he could shoot an apple off his son's head in one try. Tell succeeded and then fired another shot at the lord, killing him.
This started a revolution against the established rulers and eventually led to the foundation of Switzerland.
The crossbow with which Tell fired his famed shot is said to have been passed down through the generations, and eventually ended up in the restaurant amongst a score of other weapons ranging from the Middle Ages to WWII.
Know Before You Go
The bow is freely accessible during opening hours of the restaurant. Make sure to check the other weapons also!
