Trip Overview
Overview

On this journey down China’s east coast, we’ll examine the stories and tastes of countless delicious dishes and culinary traditions, from bustling night markets to fine-dining institutions. We’ll sample our way through a particularly delicious spread of China’s endlessly varied gastronomy, including Shandong, Huaiyang, Buddhist, and Cantonese cuisines. We’ll board buses, boats, and bullet trains, beginning in Qingdao and ending in Guangzhou, with stops in Qufu, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Suzhou, Wuzhen, and Shanghai. Immersing ourselves in culinary and cultural traditions, we’ll explore both urban and rural landscapes, meeting local craftsmen and connoisseurs wherever we go. Along the way, we’ll visit famed gardens and museums, learning about one of the oldest civilizations on Earth. But, from enjoying the banquet of Kong family with a history of over 2000 years to conversations with culinary experts, food is the centerpiece of this adventure. As a popular local saying puts it, “To the people, food is heaven.”

Itinerary

Itineraries and daily schedules are subject to change. We expect to do everything listed in the itinerary, though the order may be rearranged based on weather or other local conditions.

Trip Leader

Xiaokun ("Kun") Song
Born and raised in China, Kun eventually traveled to Europe where she received a Masters in Art History and a doctorate in Chinese Studies. Education abroad opened her eyes to the misconceptions and barriers to understanding that many outsiders face when exploring her home country. Shortly after returning home, she founded Sourcians to open China up to the curious and adventure-hungry. Using her deep knowledge and extensive connections, Kun provides meaningful experiences that inspire and awe. Her fascination for cultures has led her to use travel as a means to explore them all—from food and art to places and communities, Kun’s trips are all designed with people and learning in mind.

Pricing

The listed price of this trip is per person based on double occupancy.

Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $790. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll send a separate invoice for the cost.

Arrival & Departure

When planning your travel, we recommend that you arrive in Qingdao by 4 p.m. on Day 1 and depart from Guangzhou anytime on Day 12. Qingdao Liuting International Airport (TAO) and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) are both well-connected hubs.

Activity Level

This trip covers a lot of ground, so travelers should feel comfortable being on the road and carrying their bags on and off of trains and other vehicles.

Travelers should also be comfortable walking between four and five miles over the course of each day and remaining on their feet for long periods of time. Several parts of this trip involve some longer walks, including up and down stairs and on uneven ground.

This trip will bring travelers to parts of cities that don't always see tourists and so guests should be prepared to be fully immersed in local culture (without always having access to Western-style amenities or English translations without the help of your Trip Leader).
