The Alternative Guide

Joined Atlas Obscura in 2023

www.thealternativeguide.com Every time I travel to a new city I make a list of unusual places, quirky stores, speciality coffee shops, dark museums, independent eateries, one-off street art, diy record stores and any other off the beaten track places I can manage to find. I put my website together to provide an alternative lens on some of the major cities across the world, encourage support for local independents and share my black book of favourite places to visit. Hopefully it will inspire you to stray from the usual tourist path and at the same time provide a comprehensive guide for fellow off-beat adventurers when travelling to a new city.

Places I've been

Places this traveler has marked as been there.

Exterior of Novelty Automation, a 17th century building.

London, England

Novelty Automation

A tongue-in-cheek arcade where the games are based on everyday life.

Kensal Green Cemetery and Catacombs

London, England

Kensal Green Cemetery and Catacombs

Winding paths and ramshackle mausoleums in the oldest "park cemetery" in London.

The quaint and well-preserved Goodwin's Court.

London, England

Goodwin's Court

An easily overlooked stretch of ornate window fronts and gaslight lamps that could be right from the pages of Dickens.

The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & Natural History

London, England

The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & Natural History

This shop and gallery is a modern-day cabinet of curiosities, unassumingly positioned along an urban thoroughfare.

Gods Own Junkyard

London, England

God's Own Junkyard

A kaleidoscopic warehouse-maze of handmade neon signs.

The Ruins of St. Dunstan-in-the-East

London, England

The Ruins of St. Dunstan-in-the-East

One of the few remaining casualties of the London Blitz, this destroyed church has become an enchanting public garden.

The central interior of Leadenhall Market

London, England

Leadenhall Market

This ornate Victorian marketplace was the setting for Diagon Alley and the Leaky Cauldron in the first ‘Harry Potter’ film.

Highgate Cemetery

London, England

Highgate Cemetery

London's creepiest cemetery was once the site of dueling magicians and mobs of stake-carrying vampire hunters.
