If you're ever in the neighborhood, be sure to visit Lemur Island in the Vakona Private Reserve in eastern Madagascar. A variety of cuddly lemurs can be found on Lemur Island and they're quite friendly with humans.
Lemurs spend much of their time in the tree tops, but when curious, they'll descend to ground level to see what they can find. While only staff can feed the lemurs, that doesn't stop these adorable primates from dropping onto your shoulders or directly onto your head!
Due to their nocturnal nature, night-reflective eyes, and wailing cries, these creatures were named 'lemurs,' from the Latin 'lemures,' which translates into English as 'ghosts' or 'spirits of the dead.'
Reaching the Vakona Private Reserve and Lemur Island isn't for the faint of heart since regional flights from Africa are limited and the road to the Reserve includes winding mountain roads, sometimes heavy truck traffic, and some rough road sections (not to mention heat and humidity). That said, you'll find your visit to the Land of the Lemurs to be quite exhilarating.
