The Matrera Castle has stood outside Villamartin, Spain, for over a millennium, but what time could not do—destroy its essential character—humans finally have. Well, mostly.

The ruins of the historic castle still stand, but with some decidedly modern changes after a restoration. Private owners recently spent hundreds of thousands of euros rebuilding the structure, only to have it come out looking less like an ancient castle and more like a windowless concrete block.

“They’ve got builders in rather than restorers and, like we say round here, they’ve cocked it up,” one resident told a local TV station

The architect behind the restoration told The New York Times that it was intentional, saying that the goal was not to recreate what the castle looked like but to ensure that it remains standing.

Still, the project brought to mind another Spanish restoration that also didn’t turn out so well.
