According to legend, children once climbed the dangerous Nana Magari in Japan’s Iya Valley to urinate off the edge of the cliff to prove their bravery—a feat of both steady feet and steady stream. The statue was supposedly installed to deter any future “pee offs” by young daredevils aiming to tout their trickles.

Thinking that it must have been a bit peeved after being used as a public toilet for centuries, artist Friedrich Karl Waechter installed on its trunk a small, penis-shaped protuberance that emits a steady flow of water. The tree only stops relieving itself during cold spells, to prevent frost damage.
