About
Leganés, Spain, is a vibrant city blending history, culture, and modern charm. Visitors can explore unique attractions like the Museum of Sculpture, featuring remarkable outdoor art, and the iconic “Puerta del Aire” sculpture. Its lush parks, such as Parque Polvoranca, offer serene green spaces for relaxation.
The “Puerta del Aire” is a monumental sculpture located at the roundabout of Avenida del Museo and Avenida de Gibraltar, near the Museum of Sculpture in Leganés. Created in 1995 by José Hernández, a celebrated painter, engraver, and member of the prestigious San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, this steel artwork is shaped like an open and welcoming gateway. It features a spacious atrium at its front and a striking sphere that disrupts traditional academicism in its design. Standing 9 meters tall, the sculpture is both a significant piece of public art and a symbolic Arch of Triumph commemorating Hernández’s artistic legacy.
This iconic sculpture, made of weathering steel, reflects the artist's multifaceted creative vision. Hernández, who earned the National Fine Arts Award among other honors, was deeply connected to the city of Leganés. His works, including the Puerta del Aire, are emblematic of his innovative approach and his commitment to blending modernity with timeless forms.
The Puerta del Aire is owned by the local council. The artwork’s open design and prominent location make it a landmark in the Madrid region, embodying a spirit of hospitality and artistic excellence.
