It may be little known that the famous actress, fashion icon, and humanitarian activist Audrey Hepburn spent 30 years as a Swiss resident.

After ending her major career as an entertainer and movie star in 1968, Hepburn retreated from her celebrity life and spent several tranquil years by the picturesque Lac Leman. From 1963 until she passed away in 1993, she was a resident of Tolochenaz, a village located only a few miles from Morges.

Hepburn is buried in a rather humble yet well-kept grave in the small local cemetery among the less-famous residents of the village. It makes a surreal impression to find the celebrity’s name on a rather unassuming stone cross surrounded by pink geranium flowers. The graveyard only hosts a few dozens of graves.

Plans to exploit Hepburn’s fame to attract visitors to the area in the 1990s failed: The little local museum is permanently closed and the lonely village streets miss all signs of mass tourism. But still, eager Hepburn fans can visit the towns of Morges and Tolochenaz following a map that informs tourists about her former residential building, favorite cafés, and the town hall where the actress got married in 1969.

Know Before You Go
