About
Wisdom is hard to come by, and often requires years of experience, reflection, and schooling. While some people are fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by elders willing to share what they have learned, many others are not. In the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay, one local real estate company attempted to bridge that gap in an unexpectedly public way.
Known as the Bench of Wisdom, this unassuming stone bench sits outside a real estate office and is easy to overlook. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a place to rest or, given the pieces of chalk often scattered nearby, perhaps a spot intended to keep children occupied while their parents attend to business.
The true purpose of the bench only becomes clear upon closer inspection. Passersby are invited to write short pieces of advice, reflections, or life lessons directly onto the stone surface using the chalk provided. The messages are not curated, permanent, or attributed. Instead, they form a constantly changing collection of anonymous thoughts, offering guidance, humor, or quiet encouragement to anyone who happens to stop and read.
By turning a mundane piece of street furniture into a shared canvas, the Bench of Wisdom transforms everyday pedestrian traffic into a fleeting exchange between strangers. The chalk messages fade with time, weather, and use—much like spoken advice—ensuring that the bench remains a living, evolving record of collective experience rather than a static monument.
Know Before You Go
The bench is freely accessible, but chalk is only put out when the company is open. Wisdom is washed off at the end of the day.
