About
Ip Man, grandmaster of Wing Chun style martial arts and mentor of Bruce Lee, is universally known today partly thanks to a number of recent films based on his life such as Ip Man (2008) and The Grandmaster (2013), to name just a few.
Having started training in Wing Chun style at the age of thirteen, Ip Man was the first to teach the arts openly and founded the Vin Tsun Athletic Association with his students in 1967. He died of throat cancer in 1972, and his legacies are remembered all around the world today.
While the kung fu legend is most honoured in his birthplace of Foshan, Guangdong, there are also several locations in Hong Kong deeply associated with him, of course, including his final resting place.
The grave of Ip Man can be found in the New Territories, in a wooded cemetery located on Wu Tip Shan (Butterfly Hill) in Fanling, just behind the grand Fung Ying Seen Koon temple. It’s the largest grave in the cemetery and well-cared for, martial artists and kung fu pilgrims often paying tribute to the grandmaster with incense sticks, flowers, and more.
