About

In Amiens, the hometown of Jules Verne, several monuments celebrate the grandfather of science fiction and his works. Visitors can find his house museum, grave, and several statues portraying Verne. But one of these sculptures is a little more difficult to recognize.

On a side of the Somme River stands an unassuming stone column topped by a pair of bronze statues of little boys. While the structure may blend in as another common public sculpture, it's yet another subtle nod to Verne.

Designed by Czech sculptor Ivan Theimer and inaugurated in 2001, this monument represents Verne and his brother as children. The artwork is a tribute to the lives of children made exciting by the perilous adventures of Captain Nemo, Professor Lidenbrock, Phileas Fogg, and more.
