About
Perched on a hilltop in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, Laguardia is one of northern Spain’s most captivating small towns. Encircled by medieval walls and blessed with sweeping views of vineyards stretching toward the Sierra de Cantabria, it offers visitors a remarkable blend of history, architecture, and landscape. Its pedestrianized streets, ancient gateways, and underground wine cellars make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking authentic culture away from Spain’s larger tourist centers.
Laguardia is equally renowned for its food and wine scene. As the unofficial capital of the Rioja Alavesa wine region, it is surrounded by prestigious wineries and celebrated for traditional Basque-Riojan cuisine. Local restaurants pair world-class red wines with specialties such as grilled meats, seasonal vegetables, and pintxos. Many visitors arrive for the wine but stay for the gastronomy, which transforms every meal into a memorable experience.
Yet one of Laguardia’s most unusual attractions stands in plain sight on the façade of the nineteenth-century town hall overlooking the Plaza Mayor. There, a mechanical clock with animated figures delights spectators several times a day. Officially inaugurated on 31 December 1998, the clock has become a symbol of the town despite its relatively recent origins. At designated hours, doors open and three automatons emerge onto a small balcony while music fills the square.
The figures represent El Cachimorro and two traditional dancers performing the opening ritual of Laguardia’s Saint John festivities. Accompanied by the Pasacalles de San Juan, they dance before retreating behind the clock face. The spectacle lasts only a few minutes, but its combination of folklore, mechanical theater, and local identity has made it a beloved landmark.
