About

Located on one of the unnamed roads around the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio,  this small, almost hidden cemetery is dedicated solely to the cremains of those individuals who donated their bodies to scientific research.

Though the cemetery wasn't opened until 1996, cremains for as far back as 1966 are buried here. The remains of individuals from 1966 to 1996 are buried in one large plot, while those from the years 1997 and on are buried in graves marked yearly.

Only the year is marked on the flat stone—no names or additional information is available, as it would be virtually impossible to identify the volunteer bodies individually after the research and cremation process.

A marker stands at the entrance of the cemetery, which also has two benches and a field behind it. Wildlife like birds, deer, and rabbits can be see in the area frequently, adding a tranquility to the atmosphere. Life is ongoing. The marker reads, "Enter this place of solitude to find refuge from surrounding distractions and experience restoration of spirit."

Over the years, millions have donated their bodies to scientific research worldwide and we all benefit from their sacrifice. Leaving flowers at Memorial Park is one way of saying thank you.

Know Before You Go

This is not an easy spot to find. It is located behind the South Texas Research facility parking lot and McDermett Buildings. The cemetery is on an unnamed road off of Floyd Curl. As with any cemetery, this is a place for respect and reflection.
